The debate has been going on for years, if not decades; Which are the best home heaters? Would it be natural gas, electric, oil, wood, or propane heaters? Each has its good and bad points, and can be a point of some heated discussions, even amongst like minded folks. Cost, ease of use, availability, and portability are a few points on which to compare them.
Electric heaters, such as central units, are the easiest to use. So long as you have them serviced regularly all you have to do is switch them on and you’re good to go. The cost depends on what your utility company charges you, unless you have solar panels, this would keep your expenses down to just the maintenance. House units are not portable, and if you have a power outage you do not have heat. Natural gas, if supplied through your power company, and used for a house unit, has the same limitations as most units need an electrically generated spark to start the heater burner. Gas heaters have the drawback, or warning, that if a leak develops, or the burner does not ignite, you could seriously injure, if not kill, anyone in the house or building.
Whole house propane heaters, have the same limitations as natural gas heaters, except when used as a portable unit. Oil and wood are two other options, but with the concern for air quality the smoke and other waste they give off, make then questionable as a full time heating source. Also, with the work needed to chop the wood and then stack it, this becomes very time and space consuming. The ultimate decision as to which are the best home heaters is up to the consumer, and perhaps the laws in their area, just be safe with whichever one is chosen.
