The Dangers of a Garage Ceiling Storage

The basic purpose of your garage ceiling storage system is to declutter the floor space of your garage while providing additional storage space for your belongings. It’s like hitting two birds with just a stone, right? However, there are also a few downsides to this method of storing things. Here are some of them.

1. Falling units due to improper installation
The right use of fasteners just like nails and screws is very essential in preventing this situation from taking place. In order for your garage ceiling storage system to support the weight that your belongings put upon it, use only fasteners that are strong enough to hold your storage systems in place and be sure to tighten their grips. For instance, nails may be used to install wooden storage systems on ceilings made of wood. Always be sensible when choosing and installing the right knick-knacks because if you don’t, accidents may suddenly occur.

2. Inadequate head clearance
A garage ceiling storage is not always the ultimate answer for your storage space needs.
When you choose to do this, it calls for a sufficient head clearance inside your garage. Some experts recommend at least a 7-8 feet distance from your ceiling down to the floor which is usually the standard with most buildings or structures. When you try to install the storage unit in a garage with a lesser amount of distance between the ceiling and the floor, this may pose a hazard to tall persons who can bump their heads into the storage device.

3. Collapsible during earthquakes
Natural calamities are inevitable; therefore, if you live in an earthquake-prone area think twice before putting up a garage ceiling storage system. These units, even if securely attached to your ceilings, may break and fall especially on earthquakes with high magnitudes. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so take the proper precautionary measures.
