Massey Ferguson Tractors has been a recognized name in farming machinery since 1958. Massey Ferguson as a company is the result of a merger between Massey Harris and Harry Ferguson in 1953, the two companies came together to form Massey Harris Ferguson. It was in 1958 the Harris part of the name was dropped and the company became Massey Ferguson.

These two independent companies were both successful in their own part of the globe. Harry Ferguson Agricultural was a UK based firm, while Massey Harris was based in Canada. After the two companies merged Massey Ferguson Became a well known brand of farming machinery around the world. By 1958 they had a work force of over 23000 and European sales were up by 200 percent.

In 1960 Massey Ferguson was still an ever expanding company, with new factories being built in Europe and the purchase of and Italian tractor company. This growth saw sales reaching a record high as Massey Ferguson became known across the globe. In this year the company suffered a great loss when Harry Ferguson Died aged 85 years.

Through the 1960s and in to the 1970s Massey Ferguson continued to expand globally with sales record regularly being broken. New manufacturing plants were opened in Poland and other parts of Europe. New models were being introduced to many countries around the world, including Asia, the Middle East and South America. Now with over 67000 workers world wide and production at its highest, with more than 20000 machines being imported to Japan, Massey Ferguson was the World leader in farming machinery.

The boom of the 1970s took a downturn in the early eighties, as demand for agricultural machinery dropped. At this time the firm had direct market coverage in 180 countries and fought the downturn by continuing to introduce new models and types of farming machinery.

Following the drop in sales through the 1980s, Massey Ferguson made a huge impact on the world agricultural market, with the introduction of more new model and innovative machines. These new machines were fitted with micro computers making their production on farmland much more efficient and cost effective. This decade also saw the introduction of the new ride on lawn mowers.

Throughout the 1990s Massey Ferguson often had cause to celebrate. The company celebrated 150 years since Daniel Massey first opened his workshop in Canada, where he produced basic farming equipment.
