When you have hired a roof service, it is difficult to actually know what you are getting – before you have it. It can be hard for a lay-person to tell whether or not things are going according to plan with a building project, whether or not the work is done right, etc. This is why I want to share a few tips with you, as they may at least help a little.
What would I not accept from a roof service? Assuming I knew nothing about roofing, I would never accept a construction site without proper scaffolding around the entire perimeter of the building to be roofed. I do not desire to see anyone hurting themselves to the point of disability, nor do I wish to see the roofing of my house delayed by weeks due to a serious accident which may even force the roofer to abandon the job entirely. This means that all the required and available safety measures must always be used at the site. Don’t let anyone tell you different – it is your money and your roof!
I could never accept my property being turned into a dump, littered with off-cuts, broken tiles, nails, cigarette-butts, beer caps, etc. In fact, no matter how skilled the roofer supposedly is, if he cannot keep things tidy, I won’t trust him to do a proper job where it counts. Also, messy construction sites are known to be dangerous, so accidents would be more frequent, again delaying the work.
Lastly, I would not let anyone get away with building someone which is clearly wrong – even to my unskilled eyes. If you discover that the rain gutters are clearly sloping the wrong way – away from the downspout – then demand that it is fixed. It makes a huge difference to the finished result. Anything you spot, that you don’t like – remember to say it out loud!
