If you are considering starting to learn a new language, and you are unsure between a group class or a personal tuition, this article will be of help. My answer to you is: if you are an absolute beginner or at a very low level, go for a group class, and here is why.
It is more motivating. Attending a language course is also a social activity. Of course the main reason why you spend you hard earned money on a language course should always be to learn a new language, but being surrounded by people with your same goal will motivate you better. Especially if you meet nice fellow students, it will be easier to overcome the laziness to go to class.
You learn more. You may be good at languages and understand a lot when you go to class, but there will always be someone that gets something you hadn’t. If you are lucky enough to have a good teacher, he or she will organize a lot of group activities (in twos, threes or even more) and in these situations there is always a high chance to learn more from thanks to a class-mate who picked up something.
You can do exercises in group of threes or more. As you progress in your study, you will be able to communicate in more complex situations. Again, your teacher will hopefully use a lot of role-play techniques drawing inspiration from real life. In some of these, even group of threes or fours may be necessary, and with a one-to-one tuition that would be physically impossible.Group classes are always cheaper than one to one. Well, this is self-explanatory, but see it as an added bonus. Even you can afford one-to-one classes, saving money and getting good result is always a wise thing.
