John Goodman, of ‘Roseanne’ and ‘The Flintstones’ fame, has lost allegedly over 100 pounds, you can see that, when you compare the old picture of him on the right side with the video of his recent appearance at the David Letterman show further below. In the same show he admits that he weighted at some time over 400 pounds (this is roughly 200kg for those that prefer metric measurements). After a bit of digging around on the internet, I found out how he did it. The John Goodman secret to weight loss is actually pretty easy:
You have to burn more calories than you take in with food and drink!
Sounds too easy? The secret about ‘Weight Loss John Goodman Style’ is easy! Let’s look at some things he did and how they fit into the big picture:
John Goodman lost weight slowly.

In several interviews he gave, John Goodman stated that he started his weight loss journey back in 2007, slowly but steadily. He also explained that before that he would lose a lot of weight quickly, only to put it back on even quicker. This confirms what a lot of nutrition experts stress, that you have to lose the weight slowly to keep it off. Jo-jo dieting will only make you fatter long term.
John Goodman stopped drinking alcohol.
He admits being an alcoholic and having stopped drinking completely since 2007. He also states that being intoxicated made him eat more. Alcohol contains lot of calories, but not also that, it also makes you less likely to stick to any kind of discipline. When you have alcohol in your blood, you are more inclined to say ‘what gives if I just eat a nice pizza, instead of a healthy salad’. Without the influence of alcohol, you are more likely to stick to discipline and goals.
John Goodman was motivated.
You can’t lose weight, if, deep inside, you are not motivated to slim down. For John Goodman the main motivator were health issues (he describes himself as borderline diabetic in an interview) and the feeling that he looked ‘like a heart attack waiting to happen’. If you want to lose weight, you have to find a motivation to keep you going.
John Goodman started exercising.
Remember the bolded sentence I put at the top of this article? Here it is again:
You have to burn more calories than you take in with food and drink!
Combining exercise, burning more calories, with a healthy diet regime is the only way to lose weight permanently.
John Goodman got help.
Whilst it is not in everybody’s reach and budget to hire a personal fitness coach, like John Goodman did when hiring Mackie Shilstone, getting help and support can be done by everybody. Join a weight loss group, ask your doctor for advice and / or simply get some friends together that share the same goal and go to the gym together.
John Goodman asked his doctor first.
This is important when you want to lose a lot of weight, ask your medical practitioner for advice. A rapid weight loss, or the wrong diet, can do you more harm than good in the long run. Always get a medical first! John Goodman explained in one of the interviews he gave, that his obesity had damaged his knees, therefor he was not allow to do certain forms of exercises, but got restricted to do a lot of cardio and muscle strength training. Plus boxing
Doing martial arts in any shape or form is not only great for getting fit again, it also helps to release stress and tension.
John Goodman follows a health nutrition plan.
Forget about crash diets and intestinal flushes, to lose weight and to keep weight off, you have to give your body the nutrients it needs, not some crazy, restrictive fad diet. JG states that his diet includes all the major food groups, with an emphasis on lots of fresh vegetables and fruits plus a bit of lean meat. He also avoids refined sugars, not only because of his borderline diabetes, also because sugar creates hunger bangs. So, stop drinking these sugary soft drinks and sodas!
