How To Make Your Garden More Private

There are many concerns people have when it comes to their gardens.  One such concern is the issue of privacy.  There is something about us humans that simply wants to be private and a garden is supposed to give us that privacy.

A fence is a great way to start because you can buy them very cheaply and anyone who is at all decent in DIY can install a garden fence.  There are plenty of different materials that a fence can be made from such as wood, chain links, bamboo, and vinyl.

When you first install the garden fencing it might look a bit boring.  So if you want to liven it up a bit you can see about staining it, as long as the material allows it.  You can also use the fence as a way to grow different climbing plants such as ivy and clematis.  Not only do they look great but they are fantastic for birds and insects.

A problem that some people have with fence panels is that they can blow over very easily if there is a storm.  If you live somewhere that gets a lot of wind then you should be careful about what kind of fence you buy.  A fence that allows the wind to blow through it is generally better.  Which means something like the chain link variety.

Hedges and bushes are also great for winding areas but the problem is getting them established.  If the young saplings are constantly being buffeted by the wind they will probably just die.  So to start with you should look to see what plants are thriving in your neighbour’s garden.  You don’t need to copy them exactly but it’s good to have an idea of what grows well where you live.  When you have decided what plants to grow, you should buy a special protective barrier which will help block a lot of the wind.

Fast growing trees should be considered and one of the most popular is the leylandii.  A lot of people don’t understand how to care for them or are simply too lazy.  They can grow just a bit too fast for some folks and the result is that neighbours complain about them being too tall.  So make sure you trim them back to keep them at the correct size.  They aren’t suitable for hard-pruning which is why they often die when people try to do this.
