Build your own Glider Bench with a Plan

Choosing Glider Bench Plans
Sometimes buying a new Glider Bench is simply not an option because of the price. One solution would be to buy second hand, but another one, one with a bit more fun effect, would be to build one yourself, following a Glider Bench Plan. That would be also a great ‘Father and Kid’ project or even one that involves the whole family. So, lets see what you need to get started and how difficult such a project is in general. The main things you will need in order to build your very own glider bench are:

  • A woodworking plan for a glider bench
  • Two right hands (couldn’t resist that one ;-) )
  • Wood and basic wood working tools (depending on the plan you use)
  • Time, patience and a first aid kit ;-)

As you see I have here only included tips and advice regarding building a wooden glider bench as this is the only one you can build as a DIY handyman or handywoman. Both, polyethylene and metal benches require far more specialized and sophisticated equipment, something what is normally out of the range for people like you and me. Now lets look at this project step by step:

Choosing the right model and plan

If you are new to DIY projects, you really need to start small, with a simple plan and leave bigger, more advanced projects for later. When choosing a model and plan for a glider bench have a good thought about where and when you will build it. If you can buy easily all the material needed and if you already have the necessary tools or if you can rent them from somewhere. Try to be as realistic as possible with your own abilities. Only after you are clear about all this you can actually look at the design of the different gliding bench models available and which you like best. The most common mistake budding wood workers make is to choose a model only by its look and neglecting how difficult it is to actually build it. A lot of abandoned wood working projects around out there! Another important point to consider is what kind of wood you choose, you want use one that is easy to work with and easy to care for later on. Cedar is a great choice for example.

Buying and preparing the material

After you have decided on your dream glider bench it is now time to go shopping for the material you will need and to check if you have all the tools necessary. A good glider bench plan should always include a detailed list of the material and tools you need. One money saving tip: It is not always necessary to buy every tool you fancy, especially if you only need it for one specific project. A lot of hardware stores and garden centers have tool rentals! That helps also to keep the overall costs of the whole enterprise down.

Making time and getting help

No matter how fast you think you work, you will always need more time to finish a project then you thought. Make sure that you plan in extra time and at least one extra pair of hands, wooden benches tend to be heavy.

Actually doing it

Planning and dreaming is one thing, actually doing and building it another one. You would be surprised how many wood working plans and piles of material are laying around countrywide. There has actually developed a small industry dedicated to finish off those projects. Don’t join the crowd, do finish what you have started.

Finish and last thoughts

You see, having a glider bench doesn’t need to stay a dream if you are able to build one yourself. The right woodworking plan can be a big help with this, but don’t forget, planning and dreaming gets you only so far, you actually have to get your fingers dirty and start and finish the job at hand!
