Choosing Your Outdoor Kitchen Appliances

When planning your outdoor kitchen, you have to approach the project in an organized manner. The first thing you need is a budget. If you do not develop a budget, this is one project that can quickly spiral out of control from a cost standpoint. The price ranges of outdoor appliances are pretty wide, so you have to be realistic and decide where you fall inside the price range of each type of appliance. For example, quality stainless steel grills start at around $1000, but easily go up to a few thousand dollars. It all depends on the options you want and the brand name.

Just like grills, things like doors, side burners, etc can have a very wide range in price. When it comes to outdoor refrigeration you better sit down. If you want a stainless steel outdoor refrigerator that is UL approved and warranted for outdoor use, plan to spend at least $1200. The most popular of these refrigerators is priced closer to $1600.

Many people get sticker shock when they see these prices, because we are talking about an under counter refrigerator that is not nearly as large as a refrigerator you would normally put inside your home. But the difference is in the way it is built to withstand the heat of being outdoors and inside a cabinet.  Many people decide to get a standard under counter refrigerator for a couple of hundred dollars rather than pay for an outdoor rated refrigerator. Their thinking is they can replace it several times for the same price. Other people decide they don’t want to spend the money on an outdoor kitchen and cut corners. They would rather not have to worry about it, so they spend the money and get the outdoor refrigerator. Neither of these decisions is right or wrong. it is a personal decision you have to make based on budget and what you want out of the project.

Whichever appliances you choose, keep track of how they stack up against your budget. As long as you handle this in an organized fashion as you develop your outdoor kitchen designs, you will remain on the right path to getting an outdoor kitchen that will make you happy.
