Chlorine and Bromine are two of the most common pool chemicals used by pool owners to keep their water clean and safe for swimmers.  In this article we set out some of the key reasons why some owners decide to use bromine rather than chlorine.

Bromine is less negatively effected by sunlight.  While it does degrade under UV light, it still remains in the water.  The bromine that remains, can be oxidized by using a pool shock treatment to produce the bromine sanitizer.
Owners of chlorine pools know, that they need to get rid of combined chlorine compounds or chloramines on a regular basis.  If they build up to high levels, they can cause skin and nose irritations and an unpleasant “chlorine-like” smell, that overhangs the pool water.  While bromine also reacts with nitrates and ammonia to form bromamines, they do not irritate in the same way as chloramines and are also not unpleasant smelling.  But most important, unlike chloramines, bromamines retain a great deal of disinfectant strength.  This is a key reason why bromine is often used for pools that have a high bather load.
