Bunk Bed Ladder Building Guide
Let’s assume that the ladder that came along with your bunk bed needs to be replaced. It happens very often for a rung to brake. Also, if the ladder is damaged, it must be fixed or replaced immediately! It has a key role in keeping the top bunk inhabitant safe, when he or she is climbing up to their sleeping place. If you don’t want to go all the way to the store or order one online and have to wait a few days until it arrives, here is a way you can easily build yourself a ladder, to replace the old/broken one. You will need these items for building a bunk bed ladder:
- 5 10 foot 2×4 pieces of lumber
- 1/4 inch carriage bolts
- Nails, Sandpaper and varnish, lack or paint
- Tools like: Drill, Saw, Tape Measure and Hammer
Now you are ready to start building your new bunk bed ladder:
- The first thing that you have to do is measure the distance between the floor and the top of the mattress that is on the top bunk and cut two 2×4 pieces of lumber that have that length.
- From another 2×4 piece cut 5 1-1/2 foot pieces; these will be the rungs of the ladder. Now attach the rungs to the two long pieces that you first cut and the distance between the rungs should be 10 inches.
- Once the rungs are in place, check to see that the bunk beds ladder has the right length. If not, go back from the beginning.
- With the sandpaper roughen the top edges of the ladder; after that, stain it and varnish it and let it dry. At the end, you have to nail the ladder to the frame of the top bunk and make sure it is stable.
Once the ladder touches the floor and everything is OK, have your kids try it. If they are comfortable with it and with the distance between the rungs, your job is done and the your kids beds ladder is ready to use.
